Bacon…I remember waiting in my grandmother’s kitchen for her
to finish cooking bacon. Trying to
decide whether to put it all on one glorious sandwich, or extend my jubilation
by dividing it up into two smaller yet equally tasty pieces of perfection. She
cooked bacon for me at least twice a week every summer that I went to visit
her. It is one of my all-time favorite foods.
Tip number one, there is parking. When you walk in the central theme is bacon:
bacon signs, bacon shirts etc.. Grab a menu and
place your order at the counter. Robert and Chris were there to help us
decide, and let me tell you two more knowledgeable people about bacon you will
be hard pressed to find. Anthony ordered
the French toast and Robert expertly
suggested the mesquite bacon to go with the sweetness of the syrup. At this
point I move across the building to check the signs and things on the wall so I
don’t know what everybody else orders.
All I know is I am ready to order the Double grind burger with cheese
and Cajun bacon. Everyone goes to get
their drinks, which include Dublin dr. pepper, and some really good pink
lemonade (Maine Root). As we are sitting there, they bring out our appetizer: hush piggies,
AWESOME, definitely a must order.
However, let us not forget the
reason we are here, BACON. The
food comes out quick enough, even though I was sure I was about to die
from hunger. As I said earlier Anthony
ordered the French toast. Felda ordered
the chicken strips, JoJo, and Stacee
ordered thechicken BLT.
I need to point out that you can get the Chicken BLT grilled or fried, though ordering it grilled would be against a primal instinct deep within me. We all start eating and the food does not disappoint. The bacon is tremendous, and of course so is the French toast, the chicken and the burger. As I am finishing the last of said burger
Chris comes and sets down four pieces of the house bacon, which they smoke and cure themselves in a house on the property.I was not really sure what that means but after eating it I am sure it has something to do with some kind of dark magic that makes your mouth water for days after eating it.
First thing that I am thinking is "wait there are five of us and four pieces of bacon." I am not a mathematician, but I know someone (not me) is about to get the shaft. Anyway I get my piece and take a quick bite. WOW, that is some good bacon. I have to be honest now I am ticked because here I am with this bacon on my plate that could make a vegan slap themselves, and my burger is gone so I have nothing to eat it with.
Don’t get me wrong I love bacon by itself but I am immediately trying to decide whether to get Chris working on another grind burger with house bacon(for research purposes) or see if anyone else has a bit of a sandwich left I can procure so that I can properly give this bacon its due. My eyes go first to Anthony’s plate, French toast, not exactly what I am looking for. Felda’s ? No help there. JoJo’s plate has a couple of torn off pieces of bun left, so I am going to file that away for emergency purposes. HA! Sitting in all of its glory, on my lovely wife’s plate, is half of a chicken sandwich . Now the only problem that I can foresee is waiting on her to decide that she is not going to eat the aforementioned sandwich. Tick tock... I am about to break down. The bacon is on my plate the sandwich is on hers. OH, East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet, Till Earth and Sky stand presently at God’s great Judgment Seat. Well I cannot wait that long so I start to formulate a plan. I figure we are in a public place so the repercussions will not be too severe if I just grab it. The only thing is I need to do it in such a way that she cannot stop me before I start so… I wait for her to take a bite, now her mouth is full so I know she is not going to be able to say anything. In one fluid motion I nab the sandwich, slap the bacon on it and take a bite. Success!!!! The rest goes like this: “ I might have wanted to eat that.” Innocently I say “Really, I am sorry. You can have it back.” Reluctantly she says “ No just go ahead and keep it. I was done.” Score one for the home team, life is good.
Somewhere in the
deep recesses of my mind, in places I don’t want to talk about at parties, I
know that the sandwiches in my grandmother’s kitchen are more about the
memories and less about the bacon, but here at Bacon it is all about the
bacon. My final thought: And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these
three; but the greatest of these is charity. With BACON AUSTIN a close second.
